Find your EPDSouth East Europe representatives signed declaration calling for building renovation to be given priority status following talks on energy renovation policies in the region
May 8, 2019, Slovenia – Representatives from across South East Europe today gathered at a workshop near Ljubljana to exchange on concrete policies to dramatically upscale energy efficient building renovation across South East Europe.
The event was organised by the European Alliance of Companies for Energy Efficiency in Buildings (EuroACE) at the Knauf Insulation Experience Center in Škofja Loka.
Following detailed discussion, regional representatives of businesses and associations signed the Ljubljana Declaration stating that energy efficient building stock is one of the most cost-effective ways to sustainably stimulate the economy in South East Europe and provide tangible benefits to its citizens, while meeting the global climate commitments of the Paris Agreement.
Knauf Insulation’s Commercial Director for Northern Balkans Darko Bevk said: “Buildings cause 36% of emissions and consume 40% of energy in the European Union so it is vital that energy efficient building renovation drives any decarbonisation policies particularly in South East Europe where there is still huge potential for renovation, the percentage of inefficient buildings is high and the long-term benefits of renovation would last for generations.”
During the workshop, discussions focused on how building renovation creates new jobs, environmental benefits, including cleaner air, more comfortable buildings and alleviates energy poverty. The policy makers also examined country-specific issues such as planning long-term renovation policies, unlocking funding and working towards nearly-zero energy buildings.
A key item on the workshop agenda was the implementation of the revised Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) which must be transposed by EU Member States by March 10, 2020.
EuroACE has produced a guide to help policy makers fully unlock the potential of the directive which mandates the creation of national renovation strategies with ‘trigger points’ and milestone ‘delivery’ dates in 2030 and 2040 to ensure the transformation of EU building stock to nearly zero-energy level by 2050.
EuroACE Secretary General Adrian Joyce said: “The workshop was a valuable opportunity for countries in South East Europe to discuss the challenges and share the solutions that are specific to their region. The amendments to the EPBD are the most important changes that have occurred in the EU buildings sector in the past 15 years and it is vital that Member States in all regions implement them successfully.”
